[Abk. für Operator Type L-Chips], seit über zehn Jahren produzierte Familie von Klangerzeugungs- oder Synthesizer-Chips des Herstellers Yamaha, die in vielen Soundkarten verwendet werden. Die Bezeichnung verweist auf den Operator (Sinuswellengenerator) des Synthesizer-Chips.
 
Die Verbreitung begann Ende der 1980er-Jahre mit dem OPL2-Chip (Adlib-Soundkarte, Monoklang). Der wenige Jahre später eingeführte OPL3-Chip bot 20 statt zuvor elf Stimmen sowie Stereoklang.
 
Der OPL4-Chip kam Anfang der 1990er-Jahre auf den Markt. Er ersetzte die FM-Synthese seiner Vorgänger durch die Synthese mit Wavetables, was einen wesentlich größeren Stimmen- und Leistungsumfang ermöglichte.
